Volunteer Spotlight: Kyra Williams
Introduction by Gina McClain, Volunteer Specialist
We’re incredibly grateful to have Kyra join our volunteer manateam! She brought great energy to our time at Spark Stem at the Orlando Science Center, quickly learning our processes and stepping up as a leader. In just a short time, Kyra has taken charge of multiple events on her own, allowing us to expand our reach and participate in more engagement events with her as an additional Lead Volunteer!
What made you decide to start volunteering with Save the Manatee Club?
I decided to start volunteering with Save the Manatee Club due to my passion for conservation and love of manatees. I saw SMC through Facebook and decided to get active as soon as possible. I am very passionate about our mission, and I love educating others on the importance of what we do. I am also a huge Jimmy Buffett fan and was excited to learn that he was one of our co-founders after I had signed up.
Who is your adopted manatee, and why did you choose them?
My adopted manatee is Ariel out at Homosassa Springs. When we visited my grandparents growing up, we would go out to Homosassa Springs State Park. My main goal on those trips was always to see the manatees. My love for them started there, and it was only fitting that I chose a manatee from Homosassa. Ariel’s name drew me to her specifically, as she was my favorite princess growing up!
Do you have any favorite moments or experiences while volunteering?
I have been fortunate to participate in multiple events with SMC. One of my favorite aspects of volunteering is educating the kids. Being a part of educating children who are developing a passion for conservation and manatees is a huge gift. Every event has kids that are asking detailed questions and getting their parents involved. It is amazing to watch these kids actively learn and share their knowledge that we teach them.
Tell us briefly about your hobbies, interests, career, where you’re originally from, etc.
I am originally from North Carolina; however, I have been living in Florida for the past year. I am a Relationship Banker and have been working in the banking industry for the past 5 years. I spend most of my time volunteering, with my dog, or with my friends. I also volunteer with Blue Spring State Park and a children’s cancer organization. When I am not at work or volunteering, I enjoy traveling around Florida with my friends and taking my dog, Ellie, on little adventures. We are always looking for local activities or ways to enjoy the natural beauty of Florida.
