Volunteer Spotlight: Hannah Szuch
Introduction by Gina McClain, Volunteer Specialist
Hannah has generously donated her time to numerous events and festivals for Save the Manatee Club. As our Central Florida Lead Volunteer, she’s proven to be such a capable leader that we can participate in multiple events on the same date. With her extensive manatee knowledge gained at SeaWorld and her remarkable ability to connect with supporters about adoptions, Hannah is a tremendous asset at every event!
What made you decide to start volunteering with Save the Manatee Club?
I first discovered Save the Manatee Club while working as an educator at SeaWorld Orlando. The manatees were my favorite animals to talk about, and I always loved sharing stories of their successful rescues, rehabilitations, and releases. I learned that SMC was a partner and a key contributor to manatee protection and habitat conservation, which inspired me to become a volunteer!
Who is your adopted manatee, and why did you choose them?
I chose to adopt Moo Shoo! At first, I was drawn to her because of how adorable she is, but I soon realized I loved her curious and playful nature. It’s been so fun receiving updates about her whereabouts during the winter and sharing her photos with family and friends!
Do you have any favorite moments or experiences while volunteering?
One of the best parts of volunteering is seeing how people of all ages and from all over the world are inspired by manatees. My favorite moments are when children get really excited as they learn about these gentle giants. Their curiosity and enthusiasm to take action in their communities always inspire me.
Tell us briefly about your hobbies, interests, career, where you’re originally from, etc.
I grew up in Wilmington, NC, where living near the beach sparked my love for marine science and conservation. Now, I work in events at Universal Studios and volunteer at Blue Spring State Park, helping with social media management. In my free time, I enjoy reading, videography, spending time outdoors, and journaling. Advocating for and educating others about manatees is incredibly important to me, and I’ve loved every moment of volunteering with Save the Manatee Club!
