At Save the Manatee Club, our mission is to promote the conservation of manatees and their aquatic habitat. As part of our outreach efforts, we’ve found innovative ways to connect with people of all walks of life. One initiative close to my heart involves bringing the serene underwater world of manatees to independent living communities.

During my time working with seniors and staff in independent living communities, I discovered a unique way to introduce residents to the wonders of manatees. Using live and pre-recorded footage from ManaTV.org, we brought the tranquil world of manatees to life in the community’s movie theater. The giant screen in the community movie theater became a portal to the world of these majestic mammals.

For many residents, this was their first encounter with a manatee, and the impact of these videos was profound. Residents would gather to watch the manatees, sharing moments of awe and wonder. The gentle movements of the manatees, gliding gracefully through the water, brought a sense of tranquility and joy to the viewers. The experience also sparked conversations about manatee conservation and inspired many to learn more about our efforts to protect this imperiled species.

Through this initiative, we bridged generations, connecting seniors with the beauty of nature and fostering a sense of community around manatee conservation. This initiative reminds us that no matter our age, we can all play a role in conservation. Whether by learning, sharing, or advocating for manatees, every action makes a difference.

If you know an independent living community—or any group—that would love to experience the wonders of manatees, let’s connect and make it happen! Reach out to us at education@savethemanatee.org to explore how we can bring this experience to more people.
