In July, Jill Eardley Stephenson sent photos of a manatee gathering (possibly a mating herd) at Ponce Inlet, Florida. Jill describes the island as a sandbar that appears at lower tides and is at the ocean inlet. There is a narrow channel between the island and the vegetation you see in the pictures. "In this channel was a group of manatees that hung around in the quiet waters despite many boaters and people," says Jill. "It was amazing how reverent people were at leaving them alone and how passionately people defended them (yelling, waving arms) when people approached with boats. It was nice to see how much people cared."
